
FISHER COMPANIES HISTORY
What began as a small sand & gravel operation in Midland, Michigan, in 1925, has since evolved into a diverse group of companies, spanning multiple sectors. Founded by Ralph & Zelda Fisher, the company's journey is rooted in the principles of hard work, determination, unwavering faith, and community. Values that continue to drive the company forward as it enters its second century of business.

1914
Ralph & Zelda Fisher Assist Dow Chemical During WWI
At the start of World War I, Herbert Henry Dow hired Ralph & Zelda Fisher's 19 teams of horses to haul gravel for new construction within the rapidly expanding Dow Chemical Company.

1918
The War Ends
World War I ended and the booming economy slowed, but Ralph & Zelda made the decision to stay in the highly-competitive gravel business. Installing roads was big business in the early part of the 20th century. Their teams of horses were sold and they invested in trucks.

1925
Fisher Sand & Gravel is Founded
Ralph and Zelda made the bold decision to leave their farming roots behind and embark on a new chapter as entrepreneurs, launching their first business: Fisher Sand & Gravel. The venture began with the leasing of a gravel pit near Freeland, MI.

1946 & 1947
Fisher Sand & Gravel Finds a New Home in Midland
With the return of their sons, Arthur J. (Bill) & Jim, and the coming of age of Ralph Jr. (Bud), the three brothers slowly took-over operations. A triangle of land was purchased from Dow Chemical Company to serve as a permanent location for the fledgling business. It was around this time that concrete was added as a service, as well.

1955
Central Concrete is Founded
The three brothers expanded the ready mix concrete business by founding Central Concrete Products in Mt. Pleasant, MI. Bud Fisher served as its President. Since its founding, the company has grown to now include plant location in Mt. Pleasant (est. 1955), Alma (est. 1960), and Clare, MI (est. 2013).

1957
Fisher Contracting is Founded
As time progressed, both the heavy and civil contracting segments of the business were growing at an exponential rate. Therefore, a heavy / civil contracting business was created to better fulfill that growing need of the business. Fisher Contracting Company was founded in 1957, in Midland, MI, with Bill Fisher serving as President.

1970
Fisher Transportation is Founded
To continue in the path of vertical integration, a heavy-haul transportation services company was founded, known as Fisher Transportation. Thus, offering a complete solution from product to delivery with all other Fisher operations. Fisher Transportation quickly grew to provide services outside the Fisher operations, and now serves a diverse base of customers.

1982
Central Asphalt is Founded
During the 1980′s, an asphalt division was founded through the purchase of an already existing asphalt plant that was operating on leased Fisher land in Mt. Pleasant, MI. Central Asphalt brings a full-service asphalt production and paving company to the table, handling any job from a highway to a residential driveway. Bud Fisher served as President.

1983
Bay Aggregates is Founded
Bay Aggregates was founded at the site of the Robert Gage Coal Facility, in downtown Bay City, MI. Bay Aggregates imports limestone and other aggregates by barge for distribution throughout Mid-Michigan. Today, it is located at the mouth of the Saginaw River, providing a reliable, deep-water port, and further vertical integration amongst the operations.

1984
Midland Engine is Founded
Midland Engine was founded as an industrial and construction engine rebuilder. An authorized dealer for Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Deutz, Perkins and John Deere engines, as well as Allison Transmissions. Midland Engine is also a heavy-equipment dealer selling Hyundai, Bomag, Ingersoll Rand and other major brands of equipment.

2000
Bucks Run Golf Club is Founded
Created on what used to be an old gravel mining operation for the companies, Bucks Run Golf Club was next to be added to the Fisher Companies. Operating as a championship golf course, restaurant, and banquet facility, Bucks Run opened for business, in Mt. Pleasant, in July of 2000.

2012
Port Fisher Terminals is Founded
Port Fisher Terminals was founded and operates as a multi-modal port site, offering vessel, rail, and highway transportation access services, along with bulk material storage. Located in Bay City, MI, the port is protected by the Saginaw Bay and supported by the Saginaw River. It sits adjacent to Bay Aggregates.

2015
Fisher Construction Aggregates is Founded
Continuing with the tradition of vertical integration, an aggregate mining division was added. Fisher Construction Aggregates offers material crushing services and supplies aggregate materials to both Fisher Operations and the general public.

2012-2023
Fisher Operations Expand Outside of Michigan
In 2012, Fisher Contracting began operating a Southern Division in Tennessee. As years progressed, business relationships were built and the division continued to grow at an exponential rate. In 2023, Fisher Contracting's Southern Division cemented their presence in the area, with the construction of a permanent office and shop in Franklin, KY. The company now completes work throughout the Midwestern United States.

2025
Fisher Companies Celebrate 100 Years
February 2025 officially marks the 100th Anniversary of the Fisher Companies. To celebrate the milestone, the companies have planned a series of initiatives, including the creation of four endowed scholarships, continuing a legacy of community support, and several client/employee/public celebrations.
